Jane Crewe loves making scarves, clothes and hats from fur shed by her beloved pet dogs, Artemis and Phaidra.

Her pets are Samoyed dogs — a Siberian breed popular for its fluffy white fur.

Jane collects the shed hair and turns it into yarn using an old-fashioned spinning wheel. Then, she knits the white fur yarn into hats and scarves.

Jane, who is Scottish, washes the discarded hair, dries it for two to three days, and then spins it into yarn.

To have enough yarn, she connects with other Samoyed owners on Facebook to get more fur. Sometimes, she spins some of the furs into yarn for the dog owner. As her creative skill begins to spread, other Samoyed owners offer to send their pet fur to Jane. So far, Jane has sent custom yarn to 100 Samoyed owners.

“I like the spinning, but knitting takes a lot longer. I’m usually quite happy to pass it back to the owner,” Jane told SWNS of the yarn she’s made for others.

Jane said the undercoat fluff she collects from Samoyeds is known as “the halo” and is made up of luminous white fur with a tinge of silver.

“It’s a little bit of magic,” Jane said. “It is quite like angora.”

Not all dogs have fur that can be turned into blankets and scarves.

“You wouldn’t be able to spin Labrador or spaniel hair as there’s no undercoat,” Jane explained.

But with Samoyed hair, you can get really creative.

“You could crochet with it, or do house insulation with it, or make a duvet from it,” Jane said.
