In Cornwall, a dog’s incredible sense of smell led her owner to a mineshaft where her cat friend Mowgli had been stuck for 6 days. Michele Rose, Mowgli’s owner, told the BBC that she had “almost given up hope” of finding her missing pet, but her “superstar” dog Daisy was persistent in getting her to follow.

Rose adopted Mowgli and another kitten named Baloo last December and gradually introduced them to Daisy, who became matriarchal and very protective of the kittens. It must have been tough on Daisy when Mowgli went missing. The BBC report doesn’t mention what attempts were made to find Mowgli or what led them to the old Prince of Wales mine works in Cornwall, but it was there, after 6 days, that Daisy started going “berserk.”

Daisy led Rose to an old opening in the mines, and Rose realized what her dog was showing her. She immediately called Cornwall Fire and Rescue service, but it was too dark that day to do anything. The next morning, RSPCA animal rescue officer Stephen Findlow arrived at the mines and spotted Mowgli, who was 100 feet down but remarkably uninjured.

Mowgli was pulled to safety and greeted by his feline and canine friends and a relieved owner. “Without Daisy doing that, Mowgli could still be down there, that’s for sure,” Ms. Rose said. “She was persistent in making me follow her, it was amazing.”
