  • Rescue dog Charlie Pebbles squeezes through cat door for food
  • Owner Mia Piazza calls him a “contortionist”
  • Charlie’s unique breed mix makes him an extraordinary dog

A rescue dog named Charlie Pebbles has been caught on camera seemingly defying the laws of physics to reach a bowl of cat food. His owner, Mia Piazza from Louisiana, branded him a “contortionist” after sharing footage of him squeezing his entire body through a tiny door designed for her cat.

From the moment Piazza adopted Charlie from a local animal shelter in 2017, it’s been clear that he is no ordinary dog. “We thought that he was the most adorable dog because he looked like a Labrador, but he had the shortest legs,” Piazza told Newsweek. A DNA test revealed that Charlie is a unique mix of breeds, including Rottweiler, golden retriever, Labrador retriever, beagle, Pekingese, Australian cattle dog, Catahoula leopard dog, and even some wolf.

This special blend of breeds has resulted in a very unique dog. “He is very sassy but gentle and fun to play with. He learns quickly and is extremely smart,” Piazza said. Charlie loves to roam around and once got reported on the neighborhood watch website for eating a neighbor’s cat food.

Food is a major comfort for dogs, with one study from the University of Florida finding that nine out of 10 dogs favor something edible over their favorite toy. Charlie’s love for food led Piazza to install cat doors to keep him away from the cat food in the laundry room. The doors were meant to give the cat a safe space to eat, away from Charlie.

However, Charlie managed to overcome this obstacle, much to the amazement of his owner. “We were shocked when we saw that Charlie was able to squeeze through the door because the door was so small,” Piazza said. Since the video was filmed, Piazza has installed “French doors” to the cat flap, further reducing the entrance size and preventing Charlie from squeezing through. “Charlie Pebbles doesn’t use it anymore because of the French doors,” Piazza said. “The cats LOVE it though.”
