  • Paul, a US Marine veteran, rescued a baby squirrel from being attacked by birds that knocked her off a sidewalk.
  • He took the baby squirrel home, gave it a bath to get rid of its fleas, fed and took care of it and named her Stella.
  • Stella and Paul have shared many years together, rescuing each other from loneliness.

Paul has had a beautiful relationship with squirrels.  As a young child, he and his dad rescued a baby squirrel named Suzy and their bonding moments were spent taking care of the squirrel.  It was an experience that is etched in his heart and mind.

So, when he saw a baby squirrel being attacked by birds, he did not hesitate to help the squirrel.  The squirrel fell down onto the bird’s nest and the birds knocked her out onto the pavement.

Paul recalled that he tried putting the squirrel back near its mom but the mother ignored the baby.  He could not leave the baby squirrel there and so he just had to take the squirrel home.

Paul could not help but notice that the squirrel, which he named Stella, was uncomfortable.  It turned out that it was covered in fleas. So, he cleaned her up and gave her a bath.  It was an immediate relief for the baby squirrel! Paul said they had “instant connection” and he thinks they were meant to be together.

And their bond grew stronger as years passed by.  Attempts to release Stella back into the wild did not go as planned as Stella would choose to stay with him.  Stella would always come back to him.  And when the squirrel would see Paul being too far away from her, she would run to him.

As a disabled United States Marine veteran, Paul remains at home most of the time.  This enables him to take care of Stella, who has become a big part of Paul’s life and family. Paul says that rescuing Stella like his father did to Suzy all those years ago is one thing he is grateful for.

Paul said, “I tell everyone that I rescued her, but I can say there are times when I feel that she is the one that rescued me! The love she gives back to me and her playfulness makes me beyond happy and grateful.”

May you have more happy years together, Paul and Stella!
