There’s an old adage that pet ownership is a practice run for parenthood, and Serena Hodson epitomizes this. Caring for Madi, her 13-year-old Chihuahua, is almost like training for a baby.

Their nighttime routine, uploaded to TikTok (@thestadlerfam), has won over two million hearts worldwide. It presents Hodson sleeping next to Madi in a baby bassinet, and Madi, full of energy, waking her multiple times a night.

“Madi is quite unique and requires more care than most dogs. Some may say it’s extreme to cater to her needs so regularly, but I’d do anything to make her happier and more comfortable,” Hodson shared.

On the video posted April 5, Madi wakes Hodson at 12:30 a.m., 2:45 a.m., and 4:15 a.m. Like any doting parent, Hodson cuddles her furry friend each time she wakes. She even tucks Madi under her jumper for extra warmth before settling her on the bed.

Cleverly captioned, “She’s preparing me to be the best mother in the future,” the video has received over 111,000 likes.

By analogy, human infants are known to wake up intermittently throughout the night for feedings. Hodson habitually takes Madi outside for bathroom breaks before bedtime, and the small dog, being crate-trained, can hold it through the night.

“Madi sleeps in her bassinet by my bed because she loves being close to me while I sleep,” Hodson explained. “As a senior Chihuahua, she is very needy and requires lots of love and attention day and night. I give it to her because she deserves the world!

Often, Madi’s requirements are not as demanding as shown in the video, but Madi’s night-time barks let Hodson know when she desires some additional cuddling.
