Woman Who Asked Coworker Looking For Kidney Donor ‘How Can I Help?’ Ultimately Saved His Life

- Joey Acuña had to share his need for a kidney donor on social media in the hopes of finding one.
- A coworker, who wasn’t even that close to him, replied and registered as a prospective organ donor.
- The two underwent a successful transplant surgery, for which Joey and his family are forever thankful.
Physical therapy technician Joey Acuña has been undergoing dialysis treatments at home. The sessions sometimes lasted up to 10 hours, but he hoped that the situation wouldn’t worsen to the point that he needed a kidney donor. The waitlist contains over 100,000 people, after all.
Sadly, he was beginning to run out of alternatives.
Despite his stance of keeping his health issues private, he had no choice but to share his need for a donor on social media.

His family and friends unfortunately sent their apologies for not being able to donate.
It was then that a coworker commented on his post with a simple but kind-hearted question: “How can I help?”
Julia Mockeridge, who works as a physical therapist at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, was not that close with Joey. She didn’t even have any idea about what Joey had been going through.
But she knows just how life-changing these surgeries can be. About twenty years ago, her aunt became a kidney donor for another of her aunts. They both continued to live happily.
She may not be close to Joey, and there were health risks, but she wished for Joey to have a happy, full life with his wife and children.

So, Julia stepped up and registered as a prospective organ donor. She underwent several medical tests for her qualification for months.
Finally, she was cleared as a match for Joey in March 2021.

Within a month — and fatefully on National Donate Life month — the two underwent the life-changing transplant surgery successfully.

Joey’s family members have since met Julia and her family via Zoom, during which they thanked her.
To this day, Joey still calls Julia an “angel.”

Julia made a selfless act to donate a kidney, when most people would think twice to donate even for a relative. Thank you, Julia, for your kindness!
