Quick Smiles:

  • Positive reinforcement and patience are key to keeping dogs calm during nail trims.

For many, self-care routines like visiting a hair or nail salon are a source of joy. However, our furry friends may not share the same sentiment.

Enter Virginia, a dog owner who recently demonstrated to her service dog that nail salon visits can be fuss-free.

In a video that has since gone viral on @curiositycanine, Virginia’s black Labrador is seen patiently sitting near her feet as she gets her nails done. The caption overlaying the video humorously suggests that pampering can occur “without the drama,” despite the dog’s mildly concerned expression.

The video has since become a hit on TikTok, amassing over 102,000 views and 13,600 likes.

“In all seriousness she’s actually [really] good with her nails being done but usually once or twice a session she’ll holler for one of her toes like I cut the damn thing off,” Virginia shared in the video caption.

In response to comments, Virginia revealed her secret: “She gets treats when I do her nails, and sometimes we do training sessions with just the noise and position with more treats.”

Achieving a calm demeanor during dog nail trims involves a blend of preparation, patience, and positive reinforcement. The VCA animal hospital has shared advice on making nail trims less stressful for dogs.

The steps include familiarizing your dog with the clippers and associating them with positive experiences, such as treats. Training your dog to accept paw handling and gradually introducing the sound and feel of the clippers can also help.

Owners should aim to trim one or two nails at a time, followed by a break. If the dog shows signs of fear, it’s crucial for the owner to remain calm and avoid scolding, as this could exacerbate the issue.
