To the Rescue: Dog saves drowning young boy [Video]

  • A once unsociable pup has become a friendly, active pup who loves swimming at the beach.
  • One day, his family member spotted a drowning boy and called Max, who had a life jacket on, for help.
  • The pup swam to the boy and helped steer him safely to the shore.

The old saying ‘You can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ may be true, but not for Max.

Even without training, Max, a Staffordshire terrier/bulldog mix, instantly learned how to be a hero to a stranger — something that is not really expected of a dog who once used to be “antisocial.”

Jamie Osborn, Max’s fur mom, told The Dodo that he was a bit unsociable when they got him years back. This behavior could be because of his past. He was neglected, was never taken out for walks, and lived mostly outside.

“If we were patting him too much, he’d get up and walk away,” Jamie recalled.

But because of the love of his new family, Max soon turned from being wary to becoming jolly. He lives inside the home of his family in Port Noarlunga, Australia, and even sleeps on the bed with his 11-year-old brother Nev.

“These days, Max is a completely different dog. He’s always happy! He’s really loving and gives us lots of love and affection,” Jamie shared.

During summer, Max and his family usually spend time at the beach.

“We have kayaks and he likes to swim along with us as we paddle, so we got him a life jacket so he wouldn’t get too worn out,” Jamie said. “Rob likes to surf and snorkel, so Max can often be seen at the beach hanging with the surfers waiting for a wave.”

The beach is the family’s happy place. Max just loves splashing around in the water!

This January, they thought their summer escapade would be just like the other trips where they would do their typical water activities — until a young boy got swept out to the sea.

Rob spotted the boy struggling to escape the current, so he called out to Max for help.

“Max was just swimming around, wearing his life jacket, having a great time when the young boy got into trouble,” Jamie said. “Rob had the boy call Max over. Max was just doing what he loves best — swimming.”

In a snap, Max answered the call for help, swam toward the boy, and let him cling to his life jacket. The pup braved the current and dragged the young boy back to the shore.

When they thought that beach trip would just be an ordinary summer trip, the family got one of the greatest surprises of their lives: that their little Max has become the hero that he was probably meant to be.
