Living within the Shendiaoshan Wild Animal Nature Reserve in Weihai, China, is an elephant called Shanmai, aptly named ‘mountains.’ Shanmai recently showcased an extraordinary level of consideration and intelligence, as demonstrated by his actions towards a visitor.

The viral video clip shows Shanmai more than just another animal at the reserve; he comes to the aid of a young child by fetching the kid’s shoe that had accidentally fallen into the enclosure. The video shows the astute elephant bending down to pick up the child’s shoe with his trunk and gently tossing it back to the little one.

Interestingly, a staff member revealed the elephant initially mistook the shoe for food. Nonetheless, upon grabbing it, Shanmai swiftly grasped the true nature of the shoe and decided to return it to its correct place.

“The elephant initially mistook the shoe for food, however, once he realized this was not the case, he returned it to the owner,” said a staff member.

In recognition of this kind act, the elephant’s caretaker decided to reward Shanmai with a treat. A juicy watermelon was the chosen treat, proving more appetizing than the shoe!
